Bessie Smith was a highly respected and well-loved blues and jazz singer of her time. 

She had a beautiful and unique style of singing.

Bessie was a primary influence to Janis Joplin. (Janis thought she was a reincarnation of Bessie Smith).  Janis was shocked to learn that Bessie was buried in an unmarked grave and proceeded to raise money to purchase a headstone for Bessie.
